That was last week.
This week, we're taking that and throwing it away.*
Sometimes we just need to get away from all the action
to let the frame breathe a little;
sometimes we go far because there is so much action
and we want to capture it all.
Let's see why our fellow Street Deviants here zoom out and get loose!

1) Graphic Composition
Getting far have the effect of abstracting human figures.
These abstracted figures are great for balancing the composition
while adding interest and life to the frame; because
when the right person walks into right place in the right time,
magic happens.
Behold!
2) Context/Environment
Street Photographers also zoom out for the full impact of the scene,
whether it is for the scale or sheer absurdity that requires a whole lot of context.
There's still the decisive moment in play
which differentiates a Street shot from a regular snapshot.
3) Light and Mood
Light gives mood, but
not all light is equal.
Some requires the photographer to be far away
in order to capture it's true majesty.

Black and White

In some languages there are only two colour terms;
one for the dark/cool hues lumped into 'black',
one for the light/warm hues lumped into 'white'.
The human eyes can detect about 10 million different colours and
imagine just having two words to describe all the shades and hues -
what rich words those two must be having to cover 5 million hues each.
In the spirit of these loaded colour terms,
black and white are not just black and white as any painter would tell you.
From obsidian to charcoal to ivory to eggshell,
sometimes turning a photo into pure BW is not in the shot's best
Yard Tuesdays: Smokers, Snapshots, and Street
~ S M O K E R S ~
Snapshots and Street
Smokers are a popular subject for Street Photographers mainly because they are prime targets from their chosen activity:
they are common, but uncommon enough to be interesting,
a puff of smoke is eye catching and adds drama to the shot,
and best of all, they are usually standing pretty still.
As they are prime targets, it is easy for a shot to fall into the snapshot category.
So using smokers as our theme, let's have a little look into it.

The lines between snapshots and Street are blurry and each person draws the line differently,
but there is usually a certain je ne sais quoi within a frame tha

For the final journal of 2017, we thought we'd do something a little different.
The Yard Collective team have decided
to look into each others' galleries and pick out their favourite shots
of their fellow colleagues of the year for a short review.
